Auction item: a German (GDR) commemorative issue: set / stamp series: "100th Anniversary of the Death of Robert Schumann" – Issue I (incorrect, with issue error) + Issue II (correct).

  Features: issue date: July 10, 1956/October 8, 1956,  face value: 10/20 Pfennig - East German Pfennig,  catalog code: Mi DD 528XII+529XII / 541XII+542XII,  size: 32 x 27.5 mm,  colors: dark emerald green / red.

  The German Post Office made an embarrassing error in its July 20, 1956, issue. The 10 Pfg. and 20 Pfg. stamps commemorating the 100th anniversary of Robert Schumann's death depicted a musical excerpt from Franz Schubert's "Wanderes Nachtlied" instead of a musical score by the composer himself.

   This error led to the stamps being withdrawn from sale just three days later, on July 23, 1956. The second issue with the correct background was released on October 8, 1956.

  I am dissolving parts of my private collection. Collector's exchange is possible.
