Frederick III, Crown Prince of Prussia, 1888 German Emperor, 1831 - 1888

Although celebrated as a young man for his leadership and successes during the Second Schleswig, Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars, he nevertheless professed a hatred of warfare and was praised by friends and enemies alike for his humane conduct. Frederick III was German Emperor and King of Prussia for ninety-nine days in 1888, the Year of the Three Emperors. Frederick had married Princess Royal Victoria, eldest daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom in 1858. Frederick and Victoria were great admirers of Albert, the Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, Victoria's father.

This medallion commemorates the Battle of Weissenburg, the first of the Franco-Prussian War, when three German army corps surprised the small French garrison at Wissembourg on August 4, 1870, and the The Battle of Wörth, which took place on 6 August 1870 in the opening stages of the Franco-Prussian War.
